Move over Mardu, there’s a new favorite in standard. With Amonkhet on the rise, being out for almost a month, the meta has begun to shift. At this point, the Pro Tour has three of the eight main decks centered on zombies, and they’re taking the top. We could even say “zombies are rising”, (and then we would apologize). As the deck sees more play, I wanted to break down mono black zombies and help you bring it to your local FNM and crunch.
A big Belcher on turn four that can come back? Not bad.
Vs Mono blue
It has a good match up in every game you can cast Never on their Gearhulk or just overwhelm them. When they flood, you can just replay all your zombies and be ok. It turns into a race but you’re in it for the long haul. The only thing you have to worry about is counter spells and you can normally get around those by using Cryptbreaker, discarding cards, making zombies and then playing them from the grave. They can only Disallow 8 times!
When testing, it went about 50/50. Even after boarding, it’s a toss up. This match comes down to skill and waiting out the opponent. You want to make sure that you board-in more Nevers to deal with planeswalkers, and hold onto Grasp of Darkness for Heart of Kiran. Another sideboarding tip against planeswalkers is Lost Legacy, …because Gideon is hard to deal with. Flying is also a big problem, so make sure you have an answer to Heart. You can only Never 4 times!
Vs G/B Energy
This deck gets big quick. To counter that, you need to make dudes, faster. Menace is your best friend in this fight. Empty your hand and use Wanderer for a blocker. Abby becomes a cool combat trick for this match up and gives you life back, as well as a flier that gets in there for 9. In post-board games, you can Lost Legacy their Gearhulks and anything you think might be a bother. Gonti is really good here if you get to that Gearhulk mana and menace in with Lord. All good options here, but above all – be sure you can make more dudes than your opponent and keep up mana to save your Relentless. You can only bring back Relentless X times!
Haven’t done too much testing here, but Disposses takes that deck’s win-con out. Go wide and fast. Never is your friend. They can only cheat stuff out if they have a Marvel!
